:: THE WILDERNESS ACTION GROUP
The Wilderness Action Group is a voluntary non-government
organisation ( NGO ) and was formed in 1983 under Section
21 of the RSA Companies Act, that is, a company not-for-gain.
The Group is based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
Mission Statement:
The mission of Wilderness Action Group is to promote and advocate
the wilderness concept throughout southern Africa and elsewhere,
on public, communal and private land through a range of activities,
which may include amongst other things, the following:
Promoting
the concept of wilderness in an African context through
the recognition of indigenous knowledge and the preservation
of natural and cultural heritage;
- The provision of advice on the professional and technical
aspects of the conservation, protection and management of
wilderness areas;
- Making submissions to promote the development of appropriate
legislation and policy;
- Offering professional training courses and awareness seminars
to bridge knowledge and information gaps in wilderness conservation,
protection and management;
- Monitoring the state of conservation and management of
existing wilderness areas;
- Promoting the designation of candidate wilderness areas;
- Act in partnership and network with individuals and other
organizations with similar aims and objectives; and
- Publishing material in the popular media and scientific
journals
in
an ethical, credible and effective manner, as experts, advisors,
educators, facilitators, trainers, and leaders in the sector.
In fulfilling its Mission the Group has developed courses
to train wilderness workers, users, and people interested
in wilderness conservation. To receive accreditation for these
courses the Group has entered into a partnership with the
Centre for Environment and Development (University of KwaZulu-Natal
Pietermaritzburg Campus).
